From classic to retail. The history and evolution of World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft, the biggest and most successful MMORPG that has ever existed. Millions of people have been involved with this game in one way or another. It’s a giant game that has changed the industry forever, and today, we’re going to see how it has changed throughout the years.

Prelude: The path that led to World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft was developed by Blizzard Entertainment in 2004, but Blizzard started in 1994 as Silicon & Synapse, so they already had a relatively long history of game development. Blizzard already had excellent reputation long before WoW, they released classic after classic.

Blizzard changed the RTS genre with WarCraft: Orcs and Humans (1994); WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness (1995), and with StarCraft (1998) and modernized it with WarCraft III (2002). Diablo I (1997) and Diablo II  (2000) also became instant classics. All of these games showed a deep knowledge in game development and a really great passion shown by the developers. They really were passionate about their games, as seen by their easter eggs in multiple games of geeky moments such as the ending credits in the campaign of Warcraft III.

In the early 2000’s, as people got access to better internet connections, online-gaming became a possibility. RuneScape was the first MMORPG that became a success
